    Retrieval System for Patent Images

    Get PDF
AbstractPatent information and images play important roles to describe the novelty of an invention. However, current patent collections do not support image retrieval and patent images are become almost unsearchable. This paper presents a short review of the existing research work and challenges in patent image retrieval domain. From the review, the image feature extraction step is found to be an important step to match the query and database images successfully. In order to improve the current feature extraction step in image patent retrieval, we propose a patent image retrieval approach based on Affine-SIFT technique. Comparison discussions between the existing feature extraction techniques are presented to assess the potential of this proposed approach

    Get PDF
With the ever competitive global market swamped with more choices of high-tech gadgets from smartphones to head-mounted display eyewear like "Google Glass", Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is one of the key factors to engineering and technological advancement and the bridge to the future. In view of such significant importance, the government of Malaysia has been embarking on national policies to prioritise the education and the programmes on ICT to train and produce highly skilled ICT workers to achieve the nation's ambition to become a developed country. Despite the government efforts, studies have shown that Malaysia is still currently facing shortage of skilled ICT workers. In view of this shortage of skilled ICT worker problem, a systematic engineering problem solving theory known as TRIZ is applied to generate ideas and potential solutions to solve this problem in this research

Validating the relationship between lean dimensions and wastes: a pilot study of Malaysian industries

    Get PDF
Lean production or lean manufacturing has become one of the most well-known paradigms for the elimination of waste in the manufacturing industries. Past research in lean shows that there are some set of techniques, tools and practices which have been applied to certain levels across firms according to the respective understanding of lean production of the persons in charge of lean initiatives. This scenario led to various versions of leanness measurement in the manufacturing industry. This paper describes a pilot test analysis in validating a conceptual framework for measuring leanness in the manufacturing industry. This conceptual framework has been developed based on a new definition of lean in the context of Malaysian industries. The right perception of lean is crucial in order to develop the right measurement of true lean. An in-depth study of literature consisting of books, journals and conference articles contribute to the development of the conceptual framework. There are seven main dimensions in measuring leanness in lean manufacturing practices such as manufacturing process and equipment, manufacturing planning and scheduling, visual information system, supplier relationship, customer relationship, workforce management, and product development & technology. In addition, the framework also shows how lean dimensions in the manufacturing system relate to eight types of wastes. A questionnaire has been developed in this study to collect data from the respondents as part of the framework validation process. Descriptive analysis is used to compute the evaluation of data that have been rated by the respondents by using the five-point Likertscale. Respondents of this study are experts from the domain of lean manufacturing in Malaysia

Improving queuing system with limited resources using TRIZ and arena simulation

    Get PDF
A university cafeteria is a queueing system characterised by non-stationary time of arrival with limited resources where the arrival rate is time dependent and has different pattern of arrival for different time interval. This means at certain time of the day; the arrival rate is much higher than other time. For a university cafeteria, the arrival rate of customer during the lunchtime is higher and the food (resources) is limited. Non-stationary time dependent queueing systems are not easily modelled mathematically hence such queueing systems are modelled using simulation tools such as ARENA. In order to model a non-stationary time dependent queueing system with limited resources and solve queueing problems using ARENA, researchers have to rely on their knowledge and experience to identify the appropriate parameters of the system and make modifications to these parameters of the system to solve queueing problems by means of trial and error. Hence, this research work explores the potentials of applying a systematic problem solving tool, TRIZ to help users to make better decisions in deriving solutions to improve a non-stationary time dependent queueing system with limited resources. A case study was carried out to minimize the waiting time of the customers at the cafeteria of the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), which has queueing problems for years during lunchtime. TRIZ was applied in this case study and the results showed that TRIZ can assist researchers to derive a solution model that leads to shorter waiting time without incurring additional cost and resources

The socioeconomic landscape of the exposome during pregnancy

Background: While socioeconomic position (SEP) is consistently related to pregnancy and birth outcome dis-parities, relevant biological mechanisms are manifold, thus necessitating more comprehensive characterization of SEP-exposome associations during pregnancy. Objectives: We implemented an exposomic approach to systematically characterize the socioeconomic landscape of prenatal exposures in a setting where social segregation was less distinct in a hypotheses-generating manner. Methods: We described the correlation structure of 134 prenatal exogenous and endogenous sources (e.g., micronutrients, hormones, immunomodulatory metabolites, environmental pollutants) collected in a diverse, population-representative, urban, high-income longitudinal mother-offspring cohort (N = 1341; 2009-2011). We examined the associations between maternal, paternal, household, and areal level SEP indicators and 134 ex-posures using multiple regressions adjusted for precision variables, as well as potential effect measure modifi-cation by ethnicity and nativity. Finally, we generated summary SEP indices using Multiple Correspondence Analysis to further explore possible curved relationships. Results: Individual and household SEP were associated with anthropometric/adiposity measures, folate, omega-3 fatty acids, insulin-like growth factor-II, fasting glucose, and neopterin, an inflammatory marker. We observed paternal education was more strongly and consistently related to maternal exposures than maternal education. This was most apparent amongst couples discordant on education. Analyses revealed additional non-linear as-sociations between areal composite SEP and particulate matter. Environmental contaminants (e.g., per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and micronutrients (e.g., folate and copper) showed opposing associations by ethnicity and nativity, respectively. Discussion: SEP-exposome relationships are complex, non-linear, and context specific. Our findings reinforce the potential role of paternal contributions and context-specific modifiers of associations, such as between ethnicity and maternal diet-related exposures. Despite weak presumed areal clustering of individual exposures in our context, our approach reinforces subtle non-linearities in areal-level exposures.Peer reviewe

    Get PDF
This paper reports on the development of a web based virtual forest environment to raise the awareness of threatened plant species in particular for the family of Dipterocarpaceae. Tropical forests in Malaysia consists of unique ecosystems which are home to flora and fauna including the threatened plant species that are listed in the Red List by the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia. However, the lack of awareness on the threatened plant species somehow can jeopardise on the effort on conservation of the forest. A web based utilizing virtual environment were developed that focussed on threatened plant species. User experiments were conducted to evaluate the user acceptance on the developed application. 30 participants were divided into two groups, brochures and web version. Results showed that participants who completed the experiments with web based virtual environment increased their level of awareness as compared to the usage of conventional brochures on threatened plant species

AN IMPROVED ACTION KEY FRAMES EXTRACTION ALGORITHM FOR COMPLEX COLOUR VIDEO SHOT SUMMARIZATION

Key frame extraction is one of the critical techniques in computer vision fields such as video search, video identification and video forgeries detection. The extracted key frames should be sufficient key frames that preserve main actions in a video with compact representation. The objective of this work is to improve our previous action key frames extraction algorithm (AKF) by adapting a threshold which selects action key frames as final key frames. The threshold adaptation was achieved by using the mean value, the standard deviation, and the L1-norm instead of the comparison of user summaries evaluation method to obtain a fully automatic video summarisation algorithm, and by eliminating the conditions in selecting the final key frames to reduce the complexity of the algorithm. We have validated our proposed Improved AKF on complex colour video shots instead of the simple grey level video shots. The Improved AKF algorithm was able to extract a compact number of action key frames by preventing redundant key frames, reduce processing complexity, and preserve sufficient information about the main actions in a video shot. We then evaluated the Improved AKF algorithm with the-state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of compression ratio using Paul videos and Shih-Tang dataset. The evaluation results showed that the Improved AKF algorithm achieved better compression ratio and retained sufficient information in the extracted action key frames under different testing video shots. Therefore, the improved AKF algorithm is a suitable technique for applications in computer vision fields such as passive object-based video authentication systems
